“For most people, extending the life of the devices is the biggest activity they can do to reduce the environmental impact of technology. Repairing, selling to someone, or donating to organizations are examples. In the latter two examples, other people can take advantage of the device at a cost they can afford. As more services move to an online-only model, having a reliable internet-ready device is critical, especially for those from equity-seeking groups.”
-Mr. Ryan Fukunaga, FreeGeeks Toronto
On October 23, 2024, Circuit Revival conducted a pilot workshop for Algoma University students, featuring guest speaker and mentor Mr. Ryan Fukunaga. The event provided students with valuable hands-on experience in computer diagnostics, disassembly, and repair. Mr. Fukunaga began with a comprehensive introduction to computer hardware, emphasizing the importance of understanding inner workings for effective troubleshooting. He demonstrated various diagnostic techniques, such as running hardware tools and interpreting error codes, while guiding students through proper safety procedures and tool usage during the disassembly of computers. The hands-on portion allowed students to practice replacing faulty components and upgrading hardware under Mr. Fukunaga’s expert guidance. The workshop was well-received, with many students expressing increased confidence in their ability to diagnose and fix common issues. Given its success, Circuit Revival is considering expanding the program to offer regular sessions throughout the academic year, aiming to equip more students with essential technical skills relevant in today’s technology-driven world.
